I need to make a painful confession: somehow, LinkedIn has become an important\nsocial network to me. This isn\u2019t necessarily due to LinkedIn\u2019s sparkling\ncompetence, of course. To the contrary, LinkedIn is the Gerald Ford of social\nnetworks: the normal one that was left standing as the Richard Nixons and the\nSpiro Agnews of social media imploded around them. As with Gerald Ford, with\nLinkedIn we know that we\u2019re getting something a bit clumsy and boring, but (as\nwith post-Watergate America!), we\u2019re also getting something that isn\u2019t totally\ncrooked\u2009\u2014\u2009and that\u2019s actually a bit of a relief. But because I am finding I am spending more time here, we need to have some\nreal talk: too many of you are using LLMs to generate content. Now, this isn\u2019t\nentirely your fault: as if LLMs weren\u2019t tempting enough, LinkedIn itself is\ncheerfully (insistently!) offering to help you \"rewrite it with AI.\" It seems\nso excited to help you out, why not let it chip in and ease your own burden? Because holy hell, the writing sucks. It\u2019s not that it\u2019s mediocre (though\ncertainly that!), it\u2019s that it is so stylistically grating, riddled with\nemojis and single-sentence paragraphs and \"it\u2019s not just\u2026\u200b but also\"\nconstructions and (yes!) em-dashes that some of us use naturally\u2009\u2014\u2009but most\ndon\u2019t (or shouldn\u2019t). When you use an LLM to author a post, you may think you are generating\nplausible writing, but you aren\u2019t: to anyone who has seen even a modicum of\nLLM-generated content (a rapidly expanding demographic!), the LLM tells are\nimpossible to ignore. Bluntly, your intellectual fly is open: lots of people\nnotice\u2009\u2014\u2009but no one is pointing it out. And the problem isn\u2019t merely\nembarrassment: when you\u2009\u2014\u2009person whose perspective I want to hear!\u2009\u2014\u2009are\nobviously using an LLM to write posts for you, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s real and\nwhat is in fact generated fanfic. You definitely don\u2019t sound like you, so\u2026\u200b\nis the actual content real? I mean, maybe? But also maybe not. Regardless, I\nstop reading\u2009\u2014\u2009and so do lots of others. To be clear, I think LLMs are incredibly useful: they are helpful for\nbrainstorming, invaluable for comprehending text, and they make for\nastonishingly good editors. (And, unlike most good editors, you can freely\nignore their well-meaning suggestions without fear of igniting a civil war\nover the Oxford comma or whatever.) But LLMs are also lousy writers and (most\nimportantly!) they are not you.
