That was the opening line...

"He talks to himself a lot. Sometimes he yells at something called Stripe."

The teacher noted she asked what Stripe was.

They said: "It's the thing that makes dad happy or sad. Mostly sad."

Then came the career explanation:

"He sells invisible things to people he never meets.
They pay him every month but sometimes they stop
and then he eats cereal for dinner."

The teacher asked if I had coworkers.

"He has a friend named Slack who talks to him all day.
And a guy named Pavel who lives in the computer.
Pavel fixed something once and dad almost cried."

The class asked what my company does.

"It helps other companies do things better.
I don't know what things because dad tried to explain but I fell asleep."

The grand finale:

"One time dad made ten thousand dollars in one day
and bought mommy flowers.

Then someone canceled and he returned the flowers."

The teacher's note at the bottom said:

"Your child is very creative. We'd love to have you visit for career day."

I'm not going, because if my kid already roasted me this hard from memory, there's no surviving a live demo.

I can't explain B2B SaaS to adults, let alone kids.

My wife asked why I was staring at the transcript.
I told her I was doing competitive analysis, basically.

That is what makes this funny, he is not describing a SaaS founder, he is describing his dad.

The part about the flowers is the best, because it is a kid noticing how quickly work can change the mood in a house.

There is a lot of affection in this too, even with the roasting though.

Kids are brutally honest. 

They see the day-to-day reality we live in, stripped of all the business jargon we wrap around it.
 “Dad works on the computer in his underwear” yes, that’s pretty accurate. And the emotional rollercoaster of Stripe? Spot on.

The funniest part is how perceptive it is. Monthly subscriptions, churn, the elation of wins, the frustration of cancellations all distilled into a kid-friendly narrative. 

It’s basically a performance review from the most honest audience in the world.

As founders, we spend so much time explaining what we do in abstract terms invisible products, remote clients, recurring revenue. 

But the truth is, our work is messy, emotional, human. And apparently, hilarious to someone who doesn’t have to care about KPIs.

All I ever knew of him was our Ruglish interactions on Skype chat and his profile photo (a buzzcut, barrel chested man in a singlet).
