Until the 70s, the stock market and median wages moved in parallel. Since that, one has go ever higher while the other has been semi-stagnant. That's when the financial world move from wealth creation to wealth capture. We have 40 years of policies to unwind.

Public pensions and 401Ks are continuously, monotonously, passively funded by employees, money mindlessly going to the biggest, most monopolistic and ossified companies--that's not efficient allocation of capital. Plus all the opaque private equity funds with valuations completely divorced from the assets they hold, never mind that they are systematically destroying once profitable companies, selling assets from under them, with almost no risk to the firms brokering these deals. We are heading for a reckoning, though the biggest losers will of course not be those doing all the damage to our country.
