I'm a retired financial advisor and this is a super smart strategy. You are not fully diversified if you are only in the s&p 500, and international stocks are not as overpriced as US stocks right now. However, I can tell you from personal experience working with hundreds of people that very few people can stick with 100% of their money in the stock market without bailing out when it drops. Good for you for not bailing out

It’s so hard to think about investing or even retiring when just a week ago I was considering pulling everything out of my old Rollover IRA just to cover the cost of an upcoming colonoscopy. A single medical crisis can send me spiraling, and my income is so unreliable that it feels impossible to justify saving anything right now. Hank, it’s wonderful seeing you thrive and be excited about your finances despite just having gone through an enormous medical crisis and also having an unreliable income source of YouTube. Even if I’m not in a situation to invest right now, seeing you make this video has given me hope for the future. Thank you.

"I'm going from a fairly narrow index fund to some broader index funds" does not seem like a particularly big deal to me. Very safe, very standard advice. Entirely reasonable move.

DO NOT PUT ALL YOUR MONEY INTO THIS JUST BECAUSE HANK IS that being said. the s&p 500 is approximately 80% of the entire market. so you could get a similar outcome potentially by simply choosing a total stock market index fund such as vtsax/vti and that will include the rest of the 20% that is not in the top 500. but it will also still be weighed my market share so the top companies will still be most of the fund. so it's not perfect but a very good "set and forget" option since the fund will still automatically reorganize and balance as the market changes.

My guess is that AI will become a commodity, the profit will not be made by the model developers (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc) but rather the distributors (Azure, AWS, etc)

VT, Vanguard’s total world index, will accomplish much of what Hank is suggesting here and is a bit easier to set and forget. AVDV and AVUV are good picks to add for a small cap value tilt

I think you’d enjoy the Rational Reminder podcast. It’s a podcast devoted to the current state of evidence based investing starting with low cost index funds and then the evidence for factor tilting. It’s good that you are getting away from S&P 500 alone.

In high school we did an exercise where we pretended to buy stocks at their real prices that we thought would get the best returns over one week iirc. My stocks all tanked. So I'm glad to have had the lesson in the futility of short-term, un-diversified investing

As a finance nerd, I'm just here to say that your descriptions and instincts are sensible. My personal investments are mostly active, I am not invested in AI companies and I have a strong tilt towards small companies.
