As we recover from the horrific fire events in Los Angeles and elsewhere, it is apparent that the response has been, at times, panicked (understandably) and frequently ill-conceived. The finger pointing is in full force, blaming politicians, agencies, and conservationists. Remedies are based on traditional protocols that frequently have been proven by scientific research and significant experience to be ineffective, or worse, counterproductive. These questionable paradigms extend to a basic misunderstanding of fire ecology, burn frequency, type conversion, etc. The models reflect conflagrations as fuel-driven, rather than wind-driven. The result has been wholesale clearing of ecosystems, unmitigated habitat destruction, and portrayal of native plants as the "boogeyman" to be eliminated. Experience and science have proven otherwise. Greg will educate participants on how we can change our perceptions, and use native plants to actually protect communities and homes while maintaining habitat and year-round beauty, while also promoting lower maintenance, low water use, and superior erosion control, This is a WIN-WIN solution....more
