As of March\u00a05, \u201cusers who\u00a0\u2026 upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies will begin to receive a warning.\u201d They added that the company will \u201cconsider adding additional actions down the road.\u201d On its face, the move is perplexing. Why would a website that ostensibly prides itself on giving its users and communities a platform for free speech choose to punish the same users and communities for simply voting on content? The answer comes down to the (https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahemerson/2024/12/10/uhc-shooter-luigi-mangione-appears-to-have-been-a-redditor---and-he-researched-backpacks-and-back-pain/) onetime Reddit user , alleged CEO killer, and (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/12/luigi-mangione-manifesto-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson.html) quasi\u2013folk hero known as Luigi Mangione . Up- and downvotes, as Worstnerd noted, are the (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1lpws2/what_does_it_really_mean_to_upvotedownvote_a_post/) key engine of the Reddit infosystem . The public gauge of approvals and disapprovals afforded to a given post or comment determines its visibility within its home subreddit, its prominence across the website at large, and the poster\u2019s reputation within the user base. This serves as both a form of community moderation and a popularity contest, the means by which humble Redditors may (https://guides.co/g/a-beginners-guide-to-reddit/9668) earn wider attention or find themselves buried. It\u2019s imperfect, like any moderation forum, but as a longtime fixture of the Reddit ecosystem, it\u2019s something that\u2019s recognized and (mostly) functional. But there\u2019s another important reason why the voting infrastructure has held as durably as it has: Although Redditors understand the power their votes have, they\u2019d never had to worry about whether their votes would lead to their accounts being disciplined by Reddit . They never had to fear that clicking an arrow in one direction or the other could lead to top-down digital persecution\u2014especially when it came to discussion of fraught and (https://etymology.substack.com/p/luigi-mangione-the-tiktok-ban-and) frequently policed topics , like the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Yet that\u2019s how the implications of this new voting policy became unavoidable. On Friday, just two days after Worstnerd\u2019s announcement, a moderator for the r/popculture community\u2014which has existed since 2008\u2014announced that the (https://www.reddit.com/r/popculture/comments/1j5jngg/rpopculture_is_closed/) subreddit had been \u201cclosed.\u201d They further noted that one of their fellow moderators \u201cwas suspended for approving comments that mentioned\u201d just Luigi , not even his full name. Advertisement \u201cApparently saying \u2018luigi\u2019 is now against the rules too even though they never told us. All comments with the word \u2018luigi\u2019 get flagged as possible inciting violence,\u201d the r/popculture moderator wrote. They (https://imgur.com/a/N49SZqR) linked to a screenshot that purportedly showed the suspended user getting flagged by a moderation bot for a comment that featured a (https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=GAcOxvwZFYA) YouTube link to the 1950s Louis Prima track \u201cLuigi.\u201d (The vintage big-band anthem has seen something of a social media revival as a (https://www.instagram.com/nyc_kb/reel/DDbK8szM2KY/) frequent accompaniment for edited videos of Mangione .) R/popculture continues to feature new posts on a limited basis, having been \u201crestricted\u201d from wider view by Reddit for the time being, and its primary photo is now a reimagining of Mangione as a Jesus-like figure. A company spokesperson then (https://www.theverge.com/news/626139/reddit-luigi-mangione-automod-tool) told the Verge that there\u2019s no \u201csitewide filter for the word \u2018Luigi\u2019 or expectation that users stop talking about Luigi Mangione.\u201d That didn\u2019t seem to assure the broader community. The initial announcement, which had been (https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1j5cqq1/multiple_subreddits_express_concern_after_reddit/) flooded with skeptical comments , was (https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditSafety/duplicates/1j4cd53/warning_users_that_upvote_violent_content/?count=26&before=t3_1j5ncpe) cross-posted to dozens of other subreddits, occasionally with captions like \u201c(https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditSafety/comments/1j4cd53/warning_users_that_upvote_violent_content/) Literally 1984 \u201d and \u201c(https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditSafety/comments/1j4cd53/warning_users_that_upvote_violent_content/) Extremely bad news from our admin overlords .\u201d Advertisement That same moderator (https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeLuigi/comments/1j5lpfp/psa_the_word_luigi_is_now_flagged_by_reddit_for/) shared a PSA in r/FreeLuigi (\u201ca community to discuss healthcare reform and\u00a0\u2026 keep up to date on the case\u201d) that \u201cthe word \u2018luigi\u2019 is now flagged by reddit for violence.\u201d They included a screenshot in which a user\u2019s question about whether the community could still discuss the video game Luigi\u2019s Mansion\u00a03 had been flagged by the violence-moderation bot for mentioning the name Luigi. Advertisement Advertisement (After publication, a Reddit spokesperson wrote to Slate that \u201cone of the mods of r/popculture was suspended for approving a large number (at least 20) of comments containing direct calls for violence, including images celebrating Thomas Matthew Crooks and content calling to assassinate the president.\u201d They added that \u201cbecause r/popculture only had one remaining mod, we added Automod filters\u201d to help filter reported posts and to flag \u201ccertain keywords\u201d: \u201cThis action is specific to this one subreddit, temporary, and the mod can still approve the flagged content if it isn\u2019t violating. This was done because there was only one mod and a high volume of content.\u201d ) I spoke to one of r/FreeLuigi\u2019s moderators shortly after this PSA had been shared. \u201cI remember r/LuigiMangione got banned, then (https://www.reddit.com/r/reclassified/comments/1hiybyq/rluigimangione2_banned/) r/LuigiMangione2 , then (https://www.reddit.com/r/luigimangione3/hot/) r/LuigiMangione3 , and I think it went up to (https://www.reddit.com/r/LuigiMangione6/comments/1hl5v2f/aint_no_way/) r/LuigiMangione6 before people were like, \u2018We\u2019re not going to keep doing this,\u2019\u00a0\u201d she told me in a phone conversation. \u201cI\u2019d made one called r/LuigiFever, which was just photos of him, and (https://www.reddit.com/r/luigifever/) that got banned too .\u201d Advertisement Advertisement The r/FreeLuigi moderator wanted to make clear that she and the large majority of her 36,000-strong community are not condoning violence against health insurance CEOs. Advertisement \u201cThe main goal of the subreddit is to maintain the presumption of innocence\u2014the subreddit, the media, and the general public does not have the right to determine if he\u2019s guilty,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one in r/FreeLuigi wants anyone to get murdered, and no one is celebrating that a man died. There are obviously some crazy people on the internet who are. But an entire community of 30,000 people shouldn\u2019t be punished for one person\u2019s actions.\u201d She added that her own subreddit was taking extra moderation precautions, including using bots to monitor any troll activity, restricting mentions of Mangione to his mere initials, and forbidding the use of the phrase \u201cDeny, Defend, Depose\u201d\u2014the words that were (https://apnews.com/article/unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting-delay-deny-defend-depose-ee73ceb19f361835c654f04a3b88c50c) inscribed on the bullets used to kill Thompson. It\u2019s all part of the effort to, as she put it, preserve r/FreeLuigi\u2019s position as the \u201clast safe space.\u201d Advertisement The r/FreeLuigi moderator also pointed to another factor that she and many other Redditors believe led to this change on the website: Elon Musk. President Donald Trump\u2019s extremely online lackey has aimed plenty of ire at Reddit from his perch at DOGE, first attacking the federal workers he\u2019s been firing en masse for (https://www.reddit.com/r/fednews/comments/1ictrm6/rfednews_called_out_by_elon_himself_on_x/) discussing the chaos on r/FedNews , then expanding his purview from there. Advertisement Advertisement I spoke with the moderation team for r/PublicFreakout, who told me: \u201cIt started with r/comics.\u201d In late January, a cartoonist (https://x.com/cedrichohnstadt/status/1885088716210745555/) was permanently banned from the comics subreddit for \u201cNazi apologia,\u201d after posting a comment dismissing the idea that Musk had (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2025/01/elon-musk-nazi-salute-trump-inauguration-adl-antidefamation-league.html) made a Nazi salute at the inauguration (a gesture that, notably, had inspired a wide swath of moderators to (https://slate.com/technology/2025/01/reddit-bans-x-links-elon-musk-nazi-salute.html) block X links from their subreddits ). Musk found that cartoonist\u2019s tweet and called his ban \u201cinsane,\u201d inspiring his followers to assail r/comics. Some of the moderators of that subreddit also happened to help moderate r/WhitePeopleTwitter. So, while they were distracted by the comics brouhaha, an X account called \u201cReddit Lies\u201d shared screenshots from r/WhitePeopleTwitter discussing the identities of Musk\u2019s DOGE flunkies. The X owner then baselessly accused the subreddit of having \u201cbroken the law.\u201d That led Reddit higher-ups to (https://www.engadget.com/social-media/reddit-temporarily-bans-rwhitepeopletwitter-after-elon-musk-claimed-it-had-broken-the-law-212131945.html) ban r/WhitePeopleTwitter for 72 hours , due to \u201ca prevalence of violent content.\u201d The community returned with some restrictions applied; cheekily, it now refers to itself in its bio as \u201cWhite People Twitter BlueSky.\u201d (Naturally, its members continue to heavily criticize Musk.) There was yet another factor that members of the r/PublicFreakout team told me affected them personally. About a month ago, the right-wing technocentric outlet Pirate Wires\u2014founded by an (https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-tech-industry-war-against-media-journalists-podcasts-broletariat-2024-7) executive at Peter Thiel\u2019s Founders Fund \u2014published an \u201c(https://x.com/PirateWires/status/1892318416293539958) investigation \u201d accusing a \u201cterrorist\u201d network (read: pro-Palestinian users) of \u201castroturfing\u201d its agenda within various popular subreddits, including r/PublicFreakout. As of March\u00a05, \u201cusers who\u00a0\u2026 upvote several pieces of content banned for violating our policies will begin to receive a warning.\u201d They added that the company will \u201cconsider adding additional actions down the road.\u201d\n\n On its face, the move is perplexing. Why would a website that ostensibly prides itself on giving its users and communities a platform for free speech choose to punish the same users and communities for simply voting on content? The answer comes down to the onetime Reddit user, alleged CEO killer, and quasi\u2013folk hero known as Luigi Mangione.\n\n \n\n Up- and downvotes, as Worstnerd noted, are the key engine of the Reddit infosystem. The public gauge of approvals and disapprovals afforded to a given post or comment determines its visibility within its home subreddit, its prominence across the website at large, and the poster\u2019s reputation within the user base. This serves as both a form of community moderation and a popularity contest, the means by which humble Redditors may earn wider attention or find themselves buried. It\u2019s imperfect, like any moderation forum, but as a longtime fixture of the Reddit ecosystem, it\u2019s something that\u2019s recognized and (mostly) functional.\n\n But there\u2019s another important reason why the voting infrastructure has held as durably as it has: Although Redditors understand the power their votes have, they\u2019d never had to worry about whether their votes would lead to their accounts being disciplined by Reddit. They never had to fear that clicking an arrow in one direction or the other could lead to top-down digital persecution\u2014especially when it came to discussion of fraught and frequently policed topics, like the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n Yet that\u2019s how the implications of this new voting policy became unavoidable. On Friday, just two days after Worstnerd\u2019s announcement, a moderator for the r/popculture community\u2014which has existed since 2008\u2014announced that the subreddit had been \u201cclosed.\u201d They further noted that one of their fellow moderators \u201cwas suspended for approving comments that mentioned\u201d just Luigi, not even his full name.\n\n \n\n\n \u201cApparently saying \u2018luigi\u2019 is now against the rules too even though they never told us. All comments with the word \u2018luigi\u2019 get flagged as possible inciting violence,\u201d the r/popculture moderator wrote. They linked to a screenshot that purportedly showed the suspended user getting flagged by a moderation bot for a comment that featured a YouTube link to the 1950s Louis Prima track \u201cLuigi.\u201d (The vintage big-band anthem has seen something of a social media revival as a frequent accompaniment for edited videos of Mangione.) R/popculture continues to feature new posts on a limited basis, having been \u201crestricted\u201d from wider view by Reddit for the time being, and its primary photo is now a reimagining of Mangione as a Jesus-like figure.\n\n A company spokesperson then told the Verge that there\u2019s no \u201csitewide filter for the word \u2018Luigi\u2019 or expectation that users stop talking about Luigi Mangione.\u201d That didn\u2019t seem to assure the broader community. The initial announcement, which had been flooded with skeptical comments, was cross-posted to dozens of other subreddits, occasionally with captions like \u201cLiterally 1984\u201d and \u201cExtremely bad news from our admin overlords.\u201d\n\n \n\n\n That same moderator shared a PSA in r/FreeLuigi (\u201ca community to discuss healthcare reform and\u00a0\u2026 keep up to date on the case\u201d) that \u201cthe word \u2018luigi\u2019 is now flagged by reddit for violence.\u201d They included a screenshot in which a user\u2019s question about whether the community could still discuss the video game Luigi\u2019s Mansion\u00a03 had been flagged by the violence-moderation bot for mentioning the name Luigi.\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n (After publication, a Reddit spokesperson wrote to Slate that \u201cone of the mods of r/popculture was suspended for approving a large number (at least 20) of comments containing direct calls for violence, including images celebrating Thomas Matthew Crooks and content calling to assassinate the president.\u201d They added that \u201cbecause r/popculture only had one remaining mod, we added Automod filters\u201d to help filter reported posts and to flag \u201ccertain keywords\u201d: \u201cThis action is specific to this one subreddit, temporary, and the mod can still approve the flagged content if it isn\u2019t violating. This was done because there was only one mod and a high volume of content.\u201d)\n\n I spoke to one of r/FreeLuigi\u2019s moderators shortly after this PSA had been shared. \u201cI remember r/LuigiMangione got banned, then r/LuigiMangione2, then r/LuigiMangione3, and I think it went up to r/LuigiMangione6 before people were like, \u2018We\u2019re not going to keep doing this,\u2019\u00a0\u201d she told me in a phone conversation. \u201cI\u2019d made one called r/LuigiFever, which was just photos of him, and that got banned too.\u201d\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n The r/FreeLuigi moderator wanted to make clear that she and the large majority of her 36,000-strong community are not condoning violence against health insurance CEOs.\n\n \n\n\n \u201cThe main goal of the subreddit is to maintain the presumption of innocence\u2014the subreddit, the media, and the general public does not have the right to determine if he\u2019s guilty,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one in r/FreeLuigi wants anyone to get murdered, and no one is celebrating that a man died. There are obviously some crazy people on the internet who are. But an entire community of 30,000 people shouldn\u2019t be punished for one person\u2019s actions.\u201d\n\n She added that her own subreddit was taking extra moderation precautions, including using bots to monitor any troll activity, restricting mentions of Mangione to his mere initials, and forbidding the use of the phrase \u201cDeny, Defend, Depose\u201d\u2014the words that were inscribed on the bullets used to kill Thompson. It\u2019s all part of the effort to, as she put it, preserve r/FreeLuigi\u2019s position as the \u201clast safe space.\u201d\n\n \n\n\n The r/FreeLuigi moderator also pointed to another factor that she and many other Redditors believe led to this change on the website: Elon Musk. President Donald Trump\u2019s extremely online lackey has aimed plenty of ire at Reddit from his perch at DOGE, first attacking the federal workers he\u2019s been firing en masse for discussing the chaos on r/FedNews, then expanding his purview from there.\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n I spoke with the moderation team for r/PublicFreakout, who told me: \u201cIt started with r/comics.\u201d In late January, a cartoonist was permanently banned from the comics subreddit for \u201cNazi apologia,\u201d after posting a comment dismissing the idea that Musk had made a Nazi salute at the inauguration (a gesture that, notably, had inspired a wide swath of moderators to block X links from their subreddits). Musk found that cartoonist\u2019s tweet and called his ban \u201cinsane,\u201d inspiring his followers to assail r/comics.\n\n Some of the moderators of that subreddit also happened to help moderate r/WhitePeopleTwitter. So, while they were distracted by the comics brouhaha, an X account called \u201cReddit Lies\u201d shared screenshots from r/WhitePeopleTwitter discussing the identities of Musk\u2019s DOGE flunkies. The X owner then baselessly accused the subreddit of having \u201cbroken the law.\u201d That led Reddit higher-ups to ban r/WhitePeopleTwitter for 72 hours, due to \u201ca prevalence of violent content.\u201d The community returned with some restrictions applied; cheekily, it now refers to itself in its bio as \u201cWhite People Twitter BlueSky.\u201d (Naturally, its members continue to heavily criticize Musk.)\n\n There was yet another factor that members of the r/PublicFreakout team told me affected them personally.
