(Nearly) every suggestion I got for my ‘every country’s best recipe’ question along with (hopefully somewhat accurate) descriptions sorted by country!
Thank you so much to everyone for all of the recs! I read every comment and I love all your passion and arguments.
I plan on posting on each recipe I finish and I do want to do at least one from every country. I’m starting off in England (since that’s where I am) with beer battered fish, chips, mushy peas and curry sauce!
Edit:
The US will be done separately by state later on! I got a LOT of different suggestions with a LOT of variation and felt wrong condensing it
Edit 2: as I cook, I'll start organising things by mutual ingredients. So if you can move from England to Sweden easily via ingredients that match up between, they'll be together and I'll let you know! Please let me know if there's anything else you'd like about organisation!
Looking at the Australia list it feels like we've been revealed as a nation of 5-year olds. But love is love, and fairy bread is godly.
I guess it’s mainly because our “traditional dishes” would be those of Britain. Unless you count Aboriginal bush tucker. Weird that no cunt ever made a more well known dish out of a roo.
I love this! And I’m literally saving it for future trips. Less googling required for what to eat in a new place!
Can I make one suggestion, though? Would you consider alphabetizing the countries? Would make it more user-friendly.
Thanks for sharing!
Will do tomorrow!
There are 3 dishes from my country that I've never heard of, let alone tasted. I'll be giving them a try, and after that hit up all the other countries dishes that I can easily find ingredients for.
I actually want to try them all, but being a northern climate I imagine some of the ingredients may be hard/impossible to find.
Thanks so much for putting this together. It's going to keep me busy for an long while
I'm going to end up organising them as I cook by mutual ingredients, so if you can easily move from one country to another with mutual components they'll be easily together!
Don't forget to move Hawaii in your US dishes.
I hope you are doing it in a database, seems like a shitload of work otherwise.
Oh and good job!
Great! I want to add that in Chile, pastel de choclo ingredients are incorrect. Pastel de choclo is made with ground beef and cooked onions, covered with chicken, pieces of boiled egg and olives covered with "pastelera", which is a sweet corn paste and to finish a little more sugar on top so that it browns in the oven. The ingredients you put in the sheet could be for charquican but it doesn't have rice and beets either.
So my American dish suggestion of a microwaved hot pocket, flaming hot cheetos and a can of mountain dew didn't make it?
Wow, bunch of elitist snobs round here
Humanity is so fucking amazing. There are endless variations of meat/starch/cruciferous vegetable stew, endless variations of throw-this-grain-in-a-pot-with-an-animal-and-a-plant-and-boil-the-shit-out-of-it, a million noodles, another million dumplings, a billion breads....
And like, every single thing on this list represents ingenuity and creativity and desperation and the bond between members of a family and a community.
And to think how frightened we humans get of humans from someplace else, as though there is some unfathomable canyon between us, but really we're all of us just sitting around eating our porridge and stew and toasty buns. And how much we are missing because we're so suspicious of what might be lurking in someone else's stew-pot.
Like, why are we running all over the world murdering and pillaging each other's countries when we could be running around and SHARING OUR STEW.
