Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2014 The quality of this pepper powder (technically flakes) is top-notch. It's even beautiful to look at and smells amazing. It gives my kimchi a richer red color and more pronounced flavor than the previous brand I used (from China). I also find it spicier than previous brands I've used, so I decrease the amount called for in recipes by half or even 2/3, then add more if needed. I like most types of kimchi medium spicy. There seems to be differing opinions on whether this product is hot, or at least hotter than average. I wonder if it's due to variations in the product or because spiciness is so subjective. Maybe a little of both. My first reason for buying this particular brand is because it's made in South Korea. Almost every other "Korean" pepper powder I found here on Amazon is from China. (The only other brand of Korean pepper powder I found on this site was from a Marketplace seller at 3 times the price with shipping.) I live in Seattle, where we have lots of Asian grocery stores, and even they seem to sell only China-made pepper powders. (If anyone from the area knows of a store that actually sells Korean-made, let me know!) Sure, $13/lb is kind of expensive, but it's worth it to me for the quality and source.
28 people found this helpful Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020 I needed Korean pepper flakes to make kimchi, and I certainly wasn't disappointed by this product. Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2017 The best thing about a really good Korean-style pepper is the array of flavors beyond the mere heat. Because of these flavors, there really is no substitute for Korean dried peppers when you're making Korean food, especially kimchi. This powder has those flavors in abundance. Heatwise, I would say this pepper is somewhat hotter than others I have used, though not so scorching that you have to be unusually cautious in using it. I like the coarseness of the grind: pepper that is too fine just doesn't taste as good to me. It seems to "invade" the other flavors somehow, reducing the "brightness" that is so important an aspect of the flavor of good kiimchi. I recommend this stuff highly.
One person found this helpful Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2016 This is very good and I'm shocked by the quality of it. I've used this to made kimchi few days ago and now it's fermented that pepper powder really blend everything together nicely. I only used 1/3 cup for my kimchi and I'm still left with a lot so this could last me awhile. I guess the only con is this bag is only 1 pound. Also it does say it's from Korea but then again there's a Malaysia address beneath it which I don't understand what that's for. I opt to buy this one when compared to other ones were because of the product reviews also at my local Asian market they only sell ones from china with salt added to it. Overall this is very good quality for pepper powder.
One person found this helpful Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2014 I like this red pepper powder. I add it to my quick kimchi, soups, and stir fries. It is also a great addition for any rub needing a bit of heat. Spicy but not hot - nice flavor.
3 people found this helpful Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2022 They are flavorful and spicy, but not as hot as many peppers, like Chile, Jalapeno and Cayenne. Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2013 I tried other hot pepper flakes from my asian stores near me, but they ran out in a couple of stores. Being that I'm always at amazon shopping :), I looked up hot pepper flakes & saw 2 day free shipping. So I said why not? When It arrive, I was surprise that it was a small. But I only made that assumption, because the asian stores sells them a lot bigger. It's really flavorful and has a kick to it. I definitely recommend. I will purchase from online again unless i see it at my asian stores near me. It's worth it.

Small flakes as well as powder so your kimchi has a wonderful color with flecks of bright pepper.
One of the things I really like about this brand is the depth of flavor. If you don't like it searing hot, add less, but the flavor will still be excellent.
Great in soups and stews and as additional flavoring for pork and beef.
